Welcome to the Mount Pearl-Paradise Skating Club!

Pre-CanSkate

This program is the entry level for beginners who are at least 3 1/2 years as of July 1st. Children are placed into groups according to ability and taught by a Professional Coach. Please see below regarding required assistance on sessions. The focus of this program is to make skating fun!

Skating skills taught range from learning to stand and balance to going forwards and backwards. The Pre-CanSkate program is a readiness vehicle to prepare skaters for CanSkate. Once the skaters have passed the set criteria and mastered the essentials needed to move safely and effectively on the ice they can be moved into a CanSkate Stage 1 group on that same session or another club CanSkate session if space permits.

All skaters must have a CSA approved ice skating helmet. Bike helmets are not acceptable. Some parents also have their children wear other protective equipment like knee and shoulder pads.  Skaters should be dressed warmly but not in clothing that is restrictive.

Please Note:

We will be requiring a parent/guardian/adult over 16 to be on the ice with each skater the first 3 sessions (helmet and skates required). After 3 weeks, if the skater is not able to get up on their own and move about (even walking) the parent/guardian/adult over 16 will then have to pay a $45 Skate Canada Insurance fee and be required to stay on the sessions until the skater is prepared to be unassisted. The fee is person specific, so only the person with the insurance may attend after week 3.  This parental fee is non-refundable regardless of how many weeks the skater needs the assistance, though multiple guardians may pay the fee to be insured.
Typically children 3.5 years and older are ready to skater without parents, however we will accept younger skaters as well.
The younger the skaters are, the increased likeness that they will need an assistant beyond the 3 weeks.
**Exception: A registered MPPSC skater may be used as the assistant as long as they have passed the complete STAR 5 freeskate assessment and are at least 12 years of age. Parents are responsible for making these arrangements, should they choose this route.

Each Pre-CanSkate session is 40 minutes long.  During the first 5 minutes of the session coaches and program assistants will setup and prepare for the 30 minute lesson followed by tear down during the last 5 minutes of the session.
